Balfolk Duet and Castilian Musicians / DÚO DE BALFOLK Y MÚSICAS CASTELLANAS

This duet was born in the spring of 2016 from the curiosity about Knowing and exploring the traditional dancing rhythms, both European (balfolk) and Spanish.

Starting from the learning of the tradition, Pedro Bartolomé and Esther Sánchez develope a set of pieces for dancing, most of them self-composed. Mazurkas, valses, bourrèes and some other European dances are played in concert together with Jotas, Charros or Seguidillas, typical rhythms of our Spanish folk.

The two main instruments on stage are five strings violin and guitar, but we can also listen some vocal pieces, Charango, Pandero cuadrado, spoons…

Their first album, titled “Perpetuum mobile” was released at the end of 2017, receiving a great welcome from the national media (Tarataña/ radio 3, Entrelares/radio círculo, Diario Folk…).

Este dúo nace en la primavera de 2016 desde la inquietud por conocer y explorar los ritmos tradicionales de danza, tanto centro-europeos (bal-folk) como peninsulares.

Partiendo del aprendizaje de la tradición, Pedro Bartolomé y Esther Sánchez desarrollan un repertorio de temas bailables, en su mayoría de composición propia. Las mazurkas, valses, chapelloises, bourrés y otras danzas europeas suenan en concierto junto a  jotas, charros y seguidillas típicos de nuestro folklore castellano.

Los dos instrumentos principales que aparecen en escena son la guitarra y el violín de cinco cuerdas pero también podemos escuchar temas con voz, charango, pandero cuadrado de Peñaparda, cucharas y otras percusiones ibéricas.

ESTHER SÁNCHEZ  – Five string violin, voice and Iberian percussion / Violín de cinco cuerdas, voz y percusiones ibéricas

Esther started playing music at the age of five, thanks to Pilar, her mother. She began her music training with Isabel Prieto and finished her professional studies with Reynaldo Maceo at the music conservatory CIM Padre Antonio Soler in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid graduating in 2002.

Esther has a Bachelor´s degree in Musical Education (graduating in 2003) and Science & History of Music (graduating in 2006) at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

Over the last fifteen years, she has participated in different symphonic and chamber music orchestras: Metropolitan Orchestra of Madrid, Chamartin Symphonic orchestra, Saltarello Quartet and Camerata San Isidro. At the same time, Esther began to take an interest in the use of the violin performed in different styles (Pop-Rock, Iberian and Mediterranean Music) and to collaborate in different projects.

In 2010, Esther formed Martina Quiere Bailar, an acoustic bal folk sextet with a strong infuence from Central European folk music. Recently she has been studying traditional Iberian music in depth, learning with Eliseo Parra (a great musician and ethnomusicologyst) and after working with Zagala (Quintet) and Eliseo Parra y Las Piojas en Costura.

Comienza a jugar con el violín con 5 años, gracias a su madre, que abrió la puerta de las clases de música con Isabel Prieto porque “ya desde muy pequeña Esther cantaba y bailaba mucho”. Concluye sus estudios profesionales con Reynaldo Maceo en el Conservatorio P. Antonio Soler de Madrid.

A lo largo de los últimos 10 años ha participado en diferentes agrupaciones musicales, tanto sinfónicas como camerísticas, entre las que destacan: Orquesta Metropolitana de Madrid, Cuarteto Saltarello y Camerata San Isidro (de la cual, es miembro en la actualidad).

Al mismo tiempo, se interesa por el uso del violín en diversos estilos musicales: música tradicional de la península Ibérica y de otros países mediterráneos, de India y de Europa central, swing y jazz, rock, pop…

Actualmente continúa profundizando, principalmente en el ámbito de la música tradicional, en diferentes proyectos: Martina Quiere Bailar (sexteto de Bal Folk, nacido en 2010) Las Piojas en Costura (de la mano del maestro Eliseo Parra), Zagala (quinteto de música tradicional Ibérica) y DOS (dúo de Bal Folk y música castellana).

Es además diplomada en Magisterio Musical y licenciada en Historia y Ciencias de la Música por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

PEDRO BARTOLOMÉ – Guitar, charango, flute, voice and Iberian percussion / Guitarra, charango, flautas, voz y percusiones ibéricas

Pedro’s musical adventure began at the age fifteen when his father placed a guitar in his hands and wisely guided his first attempts. Since then he has had several musical partners who, without meaning to, have became his “maestros”: José Javier Bravo, Álvaro Matellano, Javier García Pariente, Eneas Freire, Miguel  Bellas. Pedro has played in many different musical projects such as Nautilia, Eliseo Parra & las piojas en costura, Dos, Galimatias Baroque Ensemble, Proyecto 2 16, Green Sisters, ESMAE recorder consort, Camerata piu bassa, Señor Morfus, Los Cambitas, Niños Velcro, , etc…, encompassing different music genres (Iberian folk, flamenco, rock, early music…).

Pedro has a Bachelor´s Degree in Musical and General Education and graduated in 2002, developing his teaching career in public schools in Madrid ever since. He also has a Professional Degree in Early Music, specialized in recorder with Fernando Paz at the music conservatory CIM Padre Antonio Soler in Madrid, and a Bachelor´s Degree in Early Music at ESMAE, Oporto, Portugal, under Pedro Sousa Silva´s direction.

In 2010, together with Álvaro Matellano and Óscar del Barco, he formed NAUTILIA as a work of exploration of new musical curiosities inspired by ethnic roots from all over the world, merged with the musical influences and the creativity of its members. Pedro plays recorders and charango.

In 2015, the intense stage of learning ended giving Pedro the time to regularly attend traditional Spanish singing and percussion lessons with the great musician and ethnomusicologist Eliseo Parra. Shortly thereafter he became part of the band ELISEO PARRA & LAS PIOJAS EN COSTURA, with whom he plays recorder, traditional percussions and sings all across Spain. In 2016, from the curiosity of knowing and exploring the traditional dance rhythms from Central Europe (balfolk) and the Iberian peninsula, Pedro developed, together with Esther Sánchez, a repertoire of dance pieces, most of them selfcomposed, creating the duo DOS.

Comienza su andadura musical a los 15 años, cuando su padre le pone una guitarra en las manos y muy sabiamente le guía en sus primeros pasos.

Desde ese momento ha tenido muchos compañeros musicales, los cuales, sin quererlo y sin saberlo, se han convertido en sus maestros. Entre ellos que cabe destacar a José Javier Bravo, a Álvaro Matellano, a Javier García, a Eneas Freire y a Miguel Bellas.

Durante este tiempo, aparte de formar parte de diversos proyectos musicales de muy diferentes estilos (folk, flamenco, rock, música antigua…) con los músicos anteriormente citados (entre otros tantos), estudia Magisterio musical y desarrolla su carrera docente en varios centros públicos de la Comunidad de Madrid. Estudia también el grado profesional de Flauta de pico con Fernando Paz en el CIM Padre Antonio Soler de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, y más adelante se licencia en Música Antigua especializado en Flauta de pico, en la ESMAE (Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo), en Oporto, Portugal, bajo la tutela de Pedro Sousa Silva.
Desde 2008, forma parte de Nautilia, banda que se nutre de las raíces folklóricas de todo el planeta, y las fusiona con las influencias que cada uno de sus miembros trae consigo, que van desde el funk, el jazz, o el rock progresivo, hasta la música renacentista o barroca, donde participa como flautista y charanguista.

Desde 2015 asiste regularmente a clases de cante y percusión ibérica con Eliseo Parra, formando parte de Las Piojas en costura y en 2016 forma junto con Esther Sánchez el dúo “DOS”.
