One year ago on November 7th, Leonard Cohen passed away, but his art will continue to inspire, console and elevate us. His lyrics are nonpareil, his songs like diamonds cut and polished to the point of pure reflected light. His authentic, sensual, spiritual, self-deprecating work speaks equally to the mercurial and eternal aspects of the human condition. 

Leonard Cohen falleció hace un año, el 7 de noviembre, pero su arte nos seguirá inspirando, confortando y elevando. Sus letras no tienen parangón; sus canciones son como diamantes: tallados y pulidos hasta convertirse en pura luz reflejada. Su obra —auténtica, sensual, espiritual y autocrítica— trata tanto los aspectos veleidosos de la condición humana como los eternos.

Before recordings, songs stayed alive by being passed from one mouth to the next, slowly becoming rooted in the collective consciousness. Though now we can hear Leonard at the click of a button, I believe it is still important to learn these songs and to sing them for others, and in this way share more intimately the creations of Leonard Cohen. 

Antes de que existieran las grabaciones, las canciones se mantenían vivas gracias a la tradición oral, afianzándose poco a poco en el subconsciente colectivo. Aunque ahora podemos escuchar a Leonard Cohen con solo pulsar un botón, creo que sigue siendo importante aprender estas canciones y cantarlas para otros, compartiendo así de forma más íntima sus creaciones.

The transformative power of song is indisputable—even a sad song, if masterfully written, is cathartic and life-affirming. And such was Leonard’s goal, as he once said, “It is the elimination of fear that is the subject of my songs. It is the summoning of courage—that is my strategy. To make myself strong and cheerful and courageous. That is what I try to do in my songs because that is the key to this whole problem. It is not trying to convert people to one way or another.

El poder transformador de las canciones está fuera de toda duda; incluso una canción triste, si ha sido compuesta con maestría, puede resultar catártica y reconfortante. Y ese era el objetivo de Leonard, tal y como dijo una vez: «El tema de mis canciones es eliminar los miedos. Es el armarse de valor: esa es mi estrategia. Hacerme a mí mismo fuerte, animoso y valiente. Eso es lo que intento hacer con mis canciones, porque esa es la clave de todo el problema. No se trata de convertir a la gente de una u otra forma».

So with this homage I hope to convey in some modest way the power of Leonard’s songs and the influence they continue to have on my life. I hope you enjoy the stripped down, acoustic versions of these songs that focus on the lyric and melody of modernity’s greatest troubadour. 

Por eso, con este homenaje espero poder transmitir, aunque sea modestamente, la fuerza de las canciones de Leonard y la influencia que siguen teniendo en mi vida. Espero que disfrutéis de estas versiones acústicas, reducidas a su esencia, que se centran en las letras y la melodía del más grande de los trovadores de nuestra era.

Jake Shane grew up in Illinois. He got lost in the recesses of the early blues and American folk traditions and found himself living in Nashville, where he recorded his Dostoevskian debut album, Ancient Fire (2012) and spent time working for legendary singer-songwriter John Prine while also earning a degree in Philosophy.

Jake moved to Madrid, Spain, in 2012, where he became immersed in flamenco and wrote the songs to his second album, Evening Sounds. Martin Chilton from The Daily Telegraph has written: “Jake Shane’s album Evening Sounds neatly blends folk, Americana and even some Spanish influences from his time in Madrid in pleasant melodies with some clever lyrics on songs such as ‘Before Winter’ and ‘Seascape’. An enjoyable listen.” 

After two years in Madrid, Jake became itinerant for three years, spending a few months in a dozen places and several countries. He recently moved back to Spain where he earns his living as a touring singer-songwriter and continues to refine his image-driven lyrics and explore the eternal questions through American roots music with Spanish overtones, forming a sound entirely his own.

Jake Shane se crió en Illinois. Se perdió en los vericuetos del blues temprano y de las tradiciones folk estadounidenses y acabó viviendo en Nahsville, donde grabó su álbum de debut de tintes dostoievskianos, Ancient Fire (2012), y estuvo un tiempo trabajando a las órdenes del legendario cantautor John Prime, mientras se sacaba una licenciatura en Filosofía.

Se trasladó a Madrid en 2012, y ahí se zambulló de lleno en el flamenco y escribió las canciones de su segundo disco, Evening Sounds. Martin Chilton, del The Daily Telegraph, escribió: «El álbum de Jake Shane, Evening Sounds, fusiona con elegancia folk, americana e incluso algunas influencias españolas de su etapa en Madrid en agradables melodías y letras inteligentes, como las que nos encontramos en las canciones “Before Winter” y “Seascape”. Escucharlo es todo un disfrute».

Tras dos años en Madrid, Jake se dedicó a recorrer mundo durante tres años, quedándose durante un par de meses en numerosos ciudades de varios países. Hace poco ha vuelto a España. Se gana la vida yendo de gira con su música mientras sigue puliendo sus vívidos versos y explorando cuestiones eternas mediante su música roots estadounidense con tintes españoles, que da lugar a un sonido absolutamente único.
