Marlowe first met her shadow outside some club. He was trying to light a cigarette but the icy wind kept blowing out the flame, so she shielded it.
She thought she recognised him from somewhere – she seemed to remember that he was an exotic dancer who had instigated the Kung Fu Secret Agent dance movement in Madrid several years ago. She turned out to be mistaken.
For some reason he’d seen her perform on several occasions, unbeknownst to her, and had liked what he’d heard. “As smokey as dusty,” he said. They exchanged telephone numbers and within a month he had all these songs for her to sing.

Marlowe conoció a Her Shadow por fuera de una discoteca. Intentaba encender un cigarrillo, pero el viento helado apagaba la llama una y otra vez, así que ella hizo de pantalla con sus manos.
Ella creía haberlo visto antes en algún lugar, le pareció recordar que él era el bailarín exótico que había puesto de moda el paso de baile Kung Fu Secret Agent en Madrid hacía ya varios años. Estaba equivocada.
Por algún motivo y sin saberlo ella, él la había visto actuar en numerosas ocasiones y le había gustado lo que había oído. «Una voz tan ahumada como la de Dusty», dijo él. Intercambiaron teléfonos y en un mes él había compuesto todas estas canciones para ella.
