19 May – Mark Snarski

“As much as I love The King, as much as I love Tom Waits, as much as I love Dusty Springfield, as much as I love Captain Beefheart, as much as I love Howlin´Wolf, I love Keith Richards more.”

THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MARK SNARSKI

I’d never bothered to ask why his friends called him Ghost because I already knew. The last I’d heard of him was that he was in the radioactive wastelands of the Ukraine near Chernobyl working with a documentary crew in search of a beast called The Hog, a mutant half man half boar that had grown suckers on his hooves and had the ability to climb trees

Due to the intense cold and lack of sightings they had to abandon the project and that signalled Snarski’s return to his native Australia until the European autumn when hog sightings would hopefully become more frequent.

I’d heard that he had worked as a porn script writer and as an exotic dancer in Madrid and legend has it that he had approached Sting to do the soundtrack to one of them. This is documented in a poem he recited the last time he was in Australia entitled THE LIFE AND TIMES OF STING.

I once read in an interview that he gave to an Italian newspaper back in 2010 when asked by the journalist, Giovanni Battaglia, why he had decided to abandon the song in favour of what the journalist described as “ridiculous quests and endeavours”, Snarski replied that he could never abandon the song. He considered it the greatest art form of all. Where ever he was working or whatever he was working on, he had to drop tools and scratch down notes on any available paper that he could find.

I can see what he means when I listen to the last album he recorded with The Nearly Brothers and I certainly heard it in The Jackson Code and Chad’s Tree.

I have always wished him luck in these “ridiculous quests and endeavours”, though to me there is nothing more thrilling than watching him fall as he tries to ascend the ivory tower of song. It’s what I imagine it would be like listening to Scott Walker in a squall singing My Ship Is Coming In.

My Ship Is Coming In.
